Troubleshooting a misfire on 2.7T
Hey everyone,
I'm trying to diagnose what is causing this misfire on my car. It is a stock engine as far as I know, no chip, etc. I was driving around the other day and once the car heated up it started to misfire. It felt like I lost both turbos in terms of the amount of power lost. Very shaky at idle.
I got the codes read from the stealership,
16684 - random/multiple misfire
16688 - Cyl 4 misfire
16690 - Cyl 6 misfire
16689 - Cyl 5 misfire
16686 - Cyl 2 misfire (static)
16687 - Cyl 3 misfire (static)
17865 - Exhaust temp sensor 1 bank 2 Open circuit/short circuit to B+ static
They cleared the codes, I stumbled home, and let it sit. After a few hours I figured I'd try it again and see if it would continue. It didn't stumble until after 10km of driving later that night.
I borrowed an OBD2 reader from a friend since my VAG cable is on order, and all I am getting is 16684 (random).
I changed spark plugs yesterday, added in some injector cleaner, started checking for vacuum leaks, and such.
Recent work I did was change the throttle body boot, F-hose, and diverter valves. I checked all of my connections there and they seemed fine.
Any ideas?
*edit - I have been searching on the Audi forums for what could cause this misfire, I finally figured I'd post though. Also I'm about 450 km away from an Audi dealership or mechanic so I'm not sure if I'd like to run it down to them

Brock,
Don't know if you've heard but there is a current recall on Audi's for an engine coil issue and that may be the cause of your problem. You may not have been notified yet because it's a very recent notice.
Your best bet is to go to the Audi of America Web Site and see if your model is on the list.
Good luck,
Brian A6 2.7t

I think I've heard of it, mine is a 2000 A6 2.7T, and from what I'd seen it didn't cover mine.
Also I'm up in Canada!
I think I've got this issue diagnosed. It honed in on cylinder 2 misfiring according to the OBD2, and after swapping coils and such to no avail, I swapped the ICM and watched it become cylinder 5 that is misfiring!
