Default Won't shift out of Park, no brake lights

Hey guys,

I'm having this problem with my '98 A6 Quattro. It starts just fine, but won't shift out of Park no matter what I do. Not on a hill, transmission fluid just fine, etc, etc. Worked fine before this happened.

I'm not able to shift to Neutral with it off, there are no brake lights when I press the pedal, and all the fuses seem fine.

I'd like to check the brake micro-switch because that makes a lot of sense to me given what I'm experiencing with the car...but I can't find any online resources on where it is or how to check it.

Does anyone know of a good place to check or should I go grab a Haynes manual and look there? Are there good ways to test if it's the problem or not? Is there other things that could be the problem? Not sure where to start with this one.

Thanks a ton in advance!

IIRC it is a little white box under the dash where the brake pedal lever goes. I think it is a contact type switch and a lot of times it just takes a little adjustment to fix. Also be sure you check your fuses

Don't waste your time or money on a Hayes manual
Get the Bentley manual for your vehicle

Found the box near the top of the brake pedal, above the cruise control sensor. It's a four-prong (found out that I need to know that to replace it)...but I'm not thinking the sensor is bad. It's not plugged into anything! So, yeah, that would definitely be a problem!

So now the problem becomes: I can't find the wiring harness under the dash anywhere. I spent like two hours under there and tore apart the fascia to get a better look and everything.

Does anyone know where it connects to? Maybe I can backtrack it from there?

Bentley manual, got it. I only see Haynes in the auto stores...do you have to buy those online?
