Hi guys,

I have an issue with my 2004 D3 Audi A8... Made a short trip today (about 25 miles), parked the car for 5 mins, got back into it and started it and all of a sudden, there were a few notices on the dashboard:

(1.) the yellow ABS light is on
(2.) the parking brake warning (parking brake sign, crossed out) comes on when you drive (although obviously the parking break is off, since I'm driving)
(3.) power steering is off / not working
(4.) speedometer does not work (hangs at 0 mph, does not move)

The car still drives. I actually had a general inspection on the car a few days ago (prior to the malfunctioning) and we found a small power steering leak. It was unsure whether it was just a hose or the power steering pump, I wanted to have that fixed next week.

My questions:

Can anybody advice what the general problem might be ?

Could the all of the problems (warning lights, speedometer not working) be related to the power steering malfunctioning ?

Can I check on the power steering fluid and possibly refill power steering fluid on my own until i bring in the car into the shop next week ? If so, which power steering fluid should I use ? Although this appears to be a simple task, the manual says to have this down by an Audi dealer and the black power steering container has writing on it mentioning a mineral fluid...

Thank you for your help in advance !

Thanx.

Update:

I checked on the car again after it stood for app. 3 hours. Power Steering now works and Speedometer as well, all error messages gone.

> Could it be a faulty module that caused the malfunction described in my first post ?
> Or is this an indication of some kind of overheating ?

--> I find it odd, that the errors / malfunction did not occurr while driving, but after I parked it for 5 min and started it again...

I checked on the power steering fluid, it is a little above the required minimum, will refill on Monday. Regarding that:

(a.) Where can I buy Audi OEM power steering fluid ? At Audi only ?
--> I googled OEM #G004000 and only found replicas / third party offers
(b.) I read that one should not mix - e.g. - yellow / transparent power steering fluid (third party) with the OEM green power steering fluid. Now, since the power steering fluid container on my A8 is black and you cannot see through, how would I know what is in there (e.g. yellow, green or red power steering fluid) ?

Thanx again for your help !

mixing oils is never a good idea indeed
For the color you could dip a cotton swab in the container?

Same color is not the same oil per se though

Hi Iron!

Did you solve your problem yet?
I have the same problem on my 2003 D3 Audi A8 3.7 V8.
When the weather is cold I start the car then I can drive with no problem but as soon as the (car) engine geting warm first I got the ABS warning light on and the parkingbrake then I loose the power steering and finaly the speedo fall to 0 mph.

Any idea please?

@dtsm: yes, I have found the issue and had it repaired. There are multiple possible reasons: failing speed sensor on one of your wheels, broken cables or a faulty ABS controller unit.

I have documented this problem and the entire progress here

read the thread and you'll get all the info you need...

Dear Mike,

God bless you my friend, that is the information what I need. I'm pretty sure my car got the same issue as I chacked the wiring is all OK only different is I have a "faulty" front left and rear left wheel speed sensor.

Thank you very much for your help!

Tamas,

had my ABS controller unit replaced yesterday and everything works fine now as well...

Let's hope these cars stay out of trouble for a while...

Mike,

That is great news, I'm going to try the cheaper way I found an ECU repair specialist company who can repair the ABS control unit for £250 and come with 12 months warranties. They sad I can remove the control unit from the pump (6 bolts holding) so I can save the labor cost and after I fit I'll do not have to program it just clear the faults with VCDS. It is sounds good we will see....

All the best to you!
