Default Audi MMI upgrade - risky procedure?

hi guys
before i get flamed for not searching for similar threads, let me say that i did try. unfortunately mmi isn't a possible keyword in the search function for some reason - it gets automatically excluded. so here i am, asking for help

i have an 05 a8l. i want to fit ami to it, but i have a very old version of mmi. when i asked my dealer about upgrading it, however, they said that they do not recommend updating it if nothing is wrong, and that it's risky and could end up costing me thousands of dollars.
i want to know: are there any risks in upgrading the mmi? how can a system upgrade break stuff? can i safely upgrade it myself or should i take it to the dealer? thanks.

well, by not finding out all that i needed in terms of update order I managed to brick my 07 control head to a tune of 1k to replace (which what I hear is a good price, ouch) it is now two revisions older than the one i bricked, yells at me all the time about adaptation when i vag it, but everything works so I leave it be.
It can be done, it is definitely covered here many times and on several other Audi forums (some have forum topics dedicated to MMI)
If you need to update because of a phone or something then take your time and find out what the exact steps are to update, and follow them to a "T", cross your fingers, go confess, etc...
If your system is working and you just want to tinker, go fix that thermostat that is about to fail, or the rear window shade or the trunk latch or any of the many other things you will face and an leave the MMI system alone.
Just my two cents

I have a 2005 A8L W12 and recently upgraded my MMI software so have it for $ 130.00.
It is the original Audi 3 disk set.

This is readily available from the dealer for $20-$40.
Seems a bit high to me.

For Australia it is quite a good price. Much higher at Audi dealers here.
