How straight forward is this?

I assume all that I need to do is to yank the bumper and radiators off, then disconnect exhaust, fuel and wiring harness after tying my accessories off to the side, then yank the damn thing out.

Current motor has 290k on it. I think she's about done. New motor has like 90k on it.

Next project will be a manual conversion ..

But I've seen 24hrs quoted just to take the damn thing out, is that true?

You didn't say what year it is, but by the factory repair manual steps that sounds about right.

 

Yes, 24 hours sounds about right. It's not a hard job, just a lot of job.

You may want to save some trouble and get the A/C system recovered. That way you can remove the condenser, compressor and lines vs trying to get them out of the way still hooked up or,,,,,,,we're you going to do that anyways?

 

Well, since the A/C system is unpressurized, I was going to pull them off and replace the compressor since I think the clutch is shot. Then I was going to have it professionally re-pressurized.

Seems the weather isn't cooperating, but I'm going to start on this within a week or so, just waiting for stuff from Blauparts.

 

Well guys, the car in question is a D2 (1998). I just got everything I think I need ordered. I'm going to have to try to keep everything hooked up to cut down on time. The car has developed the oil cooler coolant leak, and it's draining my cooling system after a day of driving, so since the process to fix that is to basically tear into the engine bay, I think it's time to just do the replacement.

The plan currently is to just get the new motor in the car, then see what needs replacing. I'll do spark plugs and all that jazz. Haven't yanked off the t-belt cover yet, but it's on to to do list.

Do I need to replace the flex-plate or can I use the one that's on the motor now?

 

How did the job go? I have a 1998 A8 with 185k that needs replacing also (head gasket leaks). Also, how can you know the replacement motor is a good one?
