2001 TT Gas gauge problems
Please excuse the newbie here.
My girlfriend has a 2001 TT that is having a problem with the gas gauge. Anytime the car is on the gauge in bouncing from full to empty and back. It's bouncing so hard that it makes a constant clicking sound.
What direction should I take on fixing this? I've read somewhere it could be a sending unit in the tank but want some more opinions before I tear into the tank.
thanks

it could be the sending unit. When mine acted up, I was advised her to put some Techron in the gas at least a couple of times. After the second treatment, it started working better, and since, whenever possible, I have used Chevron gas because it already has Techron in it. It's still working fine. My gauge was just showing the tank to be more full than it really was. The needle wasn't waving back and forth as you describe yours. As stated earlier, it might the the cluster.
I will get video of it the next time I am over there. I originally thought something haywire in the cluster but also on the digital display when you have it on miles left until refuel... that number fluxs wildly as well.
bumping this to the top. I was going to tear into it tonight to see if I could clean the sending units. Don't want to get to far if that is not the direction to head. I'm not looking forward to stuffing myself in the trunk to do this.
My money would be on the Cluster. You might be in luck though, because 2001.5 is when they began adding immobilizers to the cluster and made it very expensive to replace but if you have a pre 2001.5 model TT the cluster isnt that bad.
And how would I know if it was a 2001.5 or eariler one?
thanks
I don't know if this will make any difference. I just found out that this car was purchased as a canadian car then underwent the conversion to US right after the purchase.
My girlfriend is the second owner but drove the car basically from new.
I'm also dealing with a NASTY case of LCD rot. Never actually seen this before but its' real. I'm guessing that my best hope at this moment is to find a doner cluster. and replace the entire thing. What things will I have to go thru to make sure that the original mileage and stuff like that stays
thanks
