Default Changing MAF...

Hi peeps,

Today i changed out my Hazard relay with great success! only to be dampened by a FAIL with regards to my MAF.

The car has a certain hessitation in the low RPM's and according to its previous owner he never changed the MAF.. car has 121k miles and runs great! (other than the slight hesitation).... When i had the car APR'd it had an intermittent O2 sensor issue pre cat. I had it cleared and went back a week or so later to have it checked... it had come back, i didnt get the exact code im afraid but it was definitely pre cat and intermittent. My thoughts were that because the MAF is so old it could be throwing the first O2 sensor out of 'whack' hence why it is intermittent.

I ordered a new MAF from a member on VWVortex.com and he is a genuine and nice guy, the part came and i fitted it this afternoon. I was a little disappointed as it had a small crack in the mounting intake lip, but nothing that would ultimately affect the performance. After removing the old one i installed the new one and started up the car. The car idled a little rough and jumpy at first and the revs 'hunted' around for a while but settled somewhat.... i went for a drive for around 5-10 miles to let the ECU get used to the new figures and data etc... on the way home i decided to disconnect the MAF to see if there was a difference... the car performed exactly the same!.. this to me suggests the car is running on other data from the O2 sensors and then guessing the airflow to keep the car running etc... this is my understanding from other cars in Europe. The car was much worse on the new MAF and when i put the old one on it was fine again!

Do i need to do a reset of the ECU when changing the MAF? i.e. disconnect battery etc..? or should it work within a matter of minutes?

I have emailed the member in question asking for a refund and advice etc... so im sure he will be fine about it as he seemed like a nice guy, however, i just wanted to double check the procedure.

All help appreciated

There are several different version of mafs. Most dont work on more than one engine code. Also, why are you swapping mafs when you get a o2 code?

It was just a course of action replacing items that haven't been replaced... the O2 sensor will be done when i fit my new DP, so i am basically trying to do 'preventative' maintenance to keep the car reliable... Can't wait for the DP!!!...... is the DP something that can be done at home on jack stands? or is it simply too tight... 180q

I know the fwd wasnt hard at all. The top part will be the same where it connects to the turbo. You can get 3 from above and the last one is easy from below. You just need a bunch of penatrating lube (give it atleast an hour+) and a deep 17mm socket. Not sure about the removal since the fwd slides right out. You may have to cut the stock dp to remove if its like the 225
