Whenever I turn on my windshield defroster it smells like something, prob oil, is burning. I recently heard a local radio commercial talking about this saying it could be the heater core? Is that what it could be? And can I take care of this myself? thanks

 

Is this your front windshield defroster or rear windshield defroster?
That is, are your fans going turbo fast to defrost the front, or the coils in the back defrosting the rear?

 

Its only my front windshield defroster and sometimes when i put on my heater it also smells like something is burning.

 

Do some searches for heaters smelling like something is burning. I've read up on it a little before, though don't remember exactly what/where I read. I don't believe it's anything to worry about, though I understand the annoyance. I don't recall how simple/difficult it is to rectify this problem.
