Default Maybe broken thermostat?

Last night my temperature warning came on and my temp gauge was almost all the way on H. Before this it has never even crossed the halfway point. I pulled over and turned on the heat to see if it would cool down and nothing happened. I got home and coolant was leaking but there were not any cracked or broken hoses, nothing was disconnected and everything looked fine. This morning I refilled the coolant and let the car run for about 10 mins. Once the car was warmed up the temp gauge stayed at the halfway point. I start to back it out of the garage and the temp gauge shoots up almost to H and within 20 seconds its on H. I got my 60K service last week have not had time time to take care of the timing belt. Now that you guys know whats going on what do you think the problem could? Has anyone experienced this before?

Where was the coolant leaking from? If it was fromthe left side while facing the car then your water pump could begoingout.
If you cant even drive down the drive way dont try to.
I would suggest removing the bottom sound absorber and seeing if your coolants leakingnear your water pump area.
If so then the impellar is probably cracked and not letting any coolant through.
If you stil havea warranty they should fix it along with a new timing belt
hope this helps.
