Default Please not a New Tranny

I was told yesterday by my mechanic that I need a new tranny (auto tiptronic) for my 2004 with 89000 miles. I've got seriously hard "dropping" between 1st and 2nd and very high racing coming from a dead stop and general lack of responsiveness when accelerating. I haven't given up that he's wrong as basically what he did was check the computer diagnostics and reset the PRND but he didn't drop the pan or inspect the fluid in any way (this would have cost an additional $400 on top of the $200 diagnostics. I don't really know anything about transmissions but am willing to learn anything I can to keep my baby going for another 50,000 miles. Here are my questions:
1. Does anyone have any suggestions for somewhere in San Diego/So Cal that specializes in Audis that would be a good resource at a good price to get a second opinion/explore my options?
2. If I need a new tranny what are my options? The quote I got was $6100 from my mechanic...
3. If I can find a remanufactured tranny any suggestions on someone who can put it in for me?
A mechanic friend told me to leave it in an alley with the keys and hope someone takes her but I seriously love this car. Any help would be greatly greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
Gregor
