Default strut bearing question

Last weekend I replaced my upper strut mounts and bearings. When reassembling the bearing wouldn't go all the way in to the mount. It seemed a little too big. I figured that the mount is rubber so the weight of the car would push the bearing in and seat it. One side seemed to work fine, but I think the other bearing broke when the spring perch pushed it in. I ordered new parts and I'm going to try again this weekend. Are there any tricks to making sure that this doesn't happen again. Should I grease the inside of the strut mount to help the bearing go in?
TIA
