Default Tranny swap, which one??

What transmission should I use or can I use? Its the 180hp 5spd fwd. Is there any upgrade tranny? Should I rebuild mines or what? When I put it in gear it doesnt want to move, but when I let go of the clutch it dies out while in gear...? Is it broke, is it a defect? Im lost... help plz

Yep... it's broke. Mine did the same thing. What has happened is that the shear pin on your shift fork has broken off and you're now stuck in gear. Probably the 5th/6th (if you have one) gear fork. It's actually a relatively simple fix once you get inside the transmission, however that's the problem. It's a pain to get the transmission out. Well, not so bad to get it out... but getting it back in sucks. While you're in there you may want to replace your clutch disk just for fun. They're not too expensive and it beats having it done later. Do it yourself or see if you can have someone other than Audi do it because it's like a billion dollars in labor. Good luck though people are afraid of Audis.

As far as transmission upgrades, other than straight drag-racing gears which I imagine are terrible for daily driving, the only upgrade I've seen is the shear pins that you broke. You can drill out the pins and tap them and run a set screw in there to make them not break. However they are made to fail to save the fork itself because it's brass. But either way, bent fork or broken shear pin is bad, so I stayed with the shear pin.

Actually, that was a pretty quick jump to a pain in the a$$ and potentially expensive conclusion. To test what I'm saying is the problem you'll need a friend. First, try pushing the car in neutral with the clutch out. If it rolls just fine then it's not what I'm saying. If it is like you have the parking brake on then have someone sit in it and hold down the clutch. If it rolls just fine with the clutch in then yeah... I'll bet it's a shear pin because you're stuck in gear. If it doesn't roll with the clutch in either that may be good actually cause I'd be wrong then too.

Just got underneath it. The spider gear in the diff broke off and went through the tranny casing. So now im looking for a place to order parts from. I want an lsd diff and anything else I can upgrade to avoid problems with anything else in the future...

trans numbers arent the same from the TT and the VW, but yeah I was thinking I could switch out the trans. We have a couple u pull it junk yards over here and they have a couple. So I would rather get a cheap one for my wife since she doesnt need any HP gains as long as it works and save a couple grand cause they dont have any TT's in the u pull it junk yards over here lol
