Default 1996 front speakers

The front passenger side speaker scratches, and the front driver side speaker does not work at all. I have been looking for used/cheap Audi speakers, but none found.
I want to fix it now. Does anyone have used speakers that fit?
If not, what aftermarket ones (size) do I need to get?

How can I tell if the upper (tweeters) work or also need to be replaced?

Got the scratches right front speaker (and tweeter) out. Tweeter works (no crossover/highpass to protect the tweeter?). 4" rubber surround almost entirely severed (leads to non concentric movement of the coil in the air-gap, scratching).
Left front door panel is next (nothing coming from that side).

I am wondering: what speakers (again, non Bose Audio) are in the REAR doors.
Currently, shelf speakers seam to produce the lows, but from the rear door speakers only come highs? Do they only install a tweeter there, sending the lows to the shelf and highs to the doors?

Or are they the same 4" full range as in the front doors?

The 4 inch (3 bolt) Audi speaker was broken. I got 5 1/2", 4 bolt, 2 way speakers (built in crossover). I did not have the adapter, so instead of waiting until they arrive (and cost), I used 1/4 MDF that I had around. Cut 2 rings. One ID 100, OD 150, the other ID 118, OD 150. Glued them together.

I then cut off the mounting ring from the Audi speaker (as a spacer) and sanded it flat (speaker is mounted on an angle). Used this ring to drill holes into the MDF ring.

Traced the new speaker and cut all access material away. The 'ears' should not be close to the 9 o'clock position on the left side, and 3 o'clock on the right side (sheet metal of door on left side, some plastic ridge in the panel on right side (facing the inside of the passenger side, reverse for driver side).

I countersunk the 1 inch wood screws going into the 3 factory posts.
I used a bit longer wood screws for the 4 speaker screws.

My surfaces were all flat, no gap (could use some RTV sealant otherwise; don't want to have leak (acts like a short circuit for bass)).

The factory tweeter has a 6 db high pass (capacitor) built into the wire leading to it. Since my 2 way has 4 Ohm (like the factory full range and the tweeter), I wired the factory tweeter in parallel (should result in same load to the face unit).

While everything apart, I used a can (15oz) of rubberized undercoating (advance auto parts, 2 for $7) and sprayed all bare sheet metal surfaces (bottom, front, around center alu bar, upper rear; there is one sound matt in the upper and lower area, but lots of bare sheet metal).

Back together, setup sound good. Hope to have cut down on overall noise from the doors.

Driver side (nothing coming out of speaker) revealed that idiot guy had used only the 'spade' connectors but not the factory plastic connector.

The driver side full range is a 2 coil design. One coil (connected to the plastic connector; at this post, the 2 spades from the tweeter connect also). The other post on the other side (2 spades) is for the 2nd coil, which is used for (if equipped) the hands free phone. I checked both speakers (around 3.8 Ohm, not shorted), hooked them up properly. Worked.

Sprayed another can of rubberized undercoat in the same areas as on passenger side.

Sound is great now. Full test tomorrow, also test drive for noise level.
