its been a while that I worked on the AEB (have 1998 A4 and 1999 Passat).
But I remember the water pump was part of the timing belt job, or?

Anyway: on this 1997 AEB, the 'external' water pump is driven by a separate V belt that is driven off a double pulley from the power steering pump.

Is that a special arrangement for the 1997 AEB?

No one seems to have the V belt (mine broke, car overheats like crazy, obviously).

Autozone et al do not even SHOW a water pump belt AT ALL for the 1997 AEB.

 

Strange that no one sells it separately, since that belt does come in the AEB timing kit. Dealer or ECS are probably the best options.
