2.8 30V head installation q's
Early '98 B5 Quattro 2.8 30 valve
Timing belt slipped, bent some valves, new valves/guides/seals put in, now I'm reinstalling. . .
- How do I bench test the cam chain tensioner to make sure it will do what it is supposed to?
-How do I bench test the hydraulic buckets? Some squish in, some don't. What should they do? I know to let them sit after reassembly, rotate a rev or two, let sit, but how do I know they're good?
- I suppose I need the "bar" that connects the cam sprockets to ensure proper timing upon reinstallation, as I removed them to replace the cam seals?
I've got a new timing belt kit (the deluxe one $), a head gasket kit $, would like to see all this together soon before I'm completely broke - thanks!

Heads both reassembled. . . only I now realize that the cam-locking bar will not help me time the cam sprockets themselves.
All 4 cams are where they should be, 16 links between cams etc, markers lined up - but with the sprockets off, how do I line them up properly? There's a + - one tooth possible difference.

Leave the valve covers off, install the sprockets, line up the crank timing mark, and install/tension the timing belt. Use the crank mark and the cam timing marks at the back of the heads to be sure you're timed correctly. Adjust as needed.
Very well then!
I put in the lifters and CCT, here's to hoping they fill with oil as they should! Some of the lifters were squishy, guess I'll find out by the noise they make if they are good or not. Taking the head apart won't be so bad second time around, as long as I don't bend any valves. . .
