The fan/idler pulley is a crucial component in the serpentine accessory belt circuit on the 30v V6 engine so it can't really be eliminated very easily, especially if you've got an air conditioner compressor driven off the belt.

Not true at all, I ran my AHA like that for a while. That pulley does nothing important other than run the fan, if you eliminate it and run a shorter belt it'll actually cover more of the crank and AC pulleys than stock. I was even able to run a stock belt for a while, but it squealed on startup for a second.

I did read at one point of some kit to eliminate this pulley all together and use an electric fan. I'm not sure of the cost or any real benefit, but if it's cheaper, you may want to look into it.

All you need to do is cover the gaping hole in the timing covers left by the pulley bracket. If you take the lock carrier off you'll easily be able to fab something up with sheet metal. I was lazy and only covered the front portion because I didn't want to drain the radiator.

What was the solution for replacing the clutch fan pulley?

Look up a little bit, you take out the bracket completely, make a blockoff plate to cover the hole in the timing covers, buy a serpentine belt one size smaller and run an electric fan.

Honestly guys, if you're just trying to save money on a fan clutch, you can find lots of them out there for $45-100. It's not a huge job, and unless you have an electric fan sitting around that fits for free, I'm not sure why you'd do this.

I can't speak for everyone but I did it because the whole setup was cheaper than an OEM fan clutch, and it frees up a ton of space around the front of the engine so I don't have to contort my arms to reach things.
