I've got etka at the shop so I can check part #s. I know I can modify it to make it work trying to see if it's really something that's worth while or not. A bolt on or fabrication kinda deal.

Yes it is a bolt in, all 5 gears are taller in the 2.8 and both B5 01A transmissions have the 3.889 final drive. The B5 S4 has the 4.11 like some of the older 01A transmissions used in the older Audi cars.

Doing the 2.8 transmission in a A4 1.8t is good if you do plenty of fwy driving. But it will make your car feel way slower when running hard thru the gears.

Here you can see the difference between the 2 01A transmissions.

B5 A4 1.8t 01A 5 speed

B5 A4 2.8 01A 5 speed

I actually have parts to build a 01A that has a 1st/2nd gear that is taller then the B5 1.8t transmission and the same 3rd/4th. Looking to throw a 2.8 5th gear into it to make it the perfect 01A transmission for the A4 1.8t.

Here is what the gearing on that transmission will look like.

And if I recall right, to use the S4 box, you need S4 axles, which means S4 spindles, which will require S4 brakes as well. Unless you steal the S4 box, don't bother with it - it's a novelty mod more than anything. You're unlikely to gain any real-world performance from it.
This is incorrect. the B5 S4 transmission uses a 4.11 final drive, while the 01A (B5 A4 transmissions) have a 3.89 final drive.

I run a B5 2.8 transmission in my B6 A4, a lot of configurations are possible. The B5 1.8T and 2.8 transmissions are identical and have the same mounting points except for the engine mounts (which is fine, you would use your mounts on the trans) and the gearing. The 2.8L does offer a much longer gearset.

I think I misspoke in my terminology. From what I had read in the past, the combinations of ratios and final drives in S4 vs 2.8 transmissions ended up being equivalent enough that the changeover was essentially transparent. However I have not driven such a combo so I was only going on what I've read about the 6-speed and what I've seen in my own car. Sorry if I muddied up the waters here!

If the allroad has the HP2 calipers on there (same as S4) then you can swap it to the A4 yes. Most allroads with 2.7T engines run HP2 calipers. HP2 calipers basically have 4 small pads on each side, if thats yours, slap em on your A4.

Seems that I've read some conflicting things about S4 brakes on the A4. Auditech79, when you say "slap 'em on your A4" is that a direct fit? I was under the impression that some modification was needed (spacing bracket or different carrier maybe?) or is the HP2 literally a direct fit on the A4?

Here you can compare the 2, both have a 8500 rpm rev limiter.

2.8 transmission

S4 2.7 6 speed

Hmm... Ya i suppose i just need a 6th gear. I do a combo of stop and go traffic and highway driving. As far as the allroad brakes go, im not positive the stock 16's will fit with the larger calipers. Input again would be sweet.

Yeah you need the carrier, but he can just take the carrier off the allroad because he is installing RS6 brakes which require an even bigger carrier.
