Default 2001 audi a4 auto transmission removal questions ...

Hey I want to know if is easier to remove the transmission and engine at the same time or it would be easier just to remove the transmission alone ?

Depending on your technical ability and the equipment at hand, it is most likely simpler to remove the gearbox independent of the engine.

If the vehicle is a quattro, there are more parts to remove and the vehicle must be positioned to not become unstable when a major part such as the gearbox is removed.

Refer to the Bentley workshop manual for the correct procedure.

I am going to go against the other poster. I have never taken out an auto tranny in an audi, but I heard they are pigs. A lot of guys say its easier, auto or manual, to take out both the engine and the transmission at once.

Taking out just the transmission may be faster, but with the engine out you have a ton more room to work inside the way and get some preventative maintenance done.

But you didn't say which engine. if its a 1.8t, I'd take both of them out. If it's a v6, I'd do just the tranny

If you have a lift and transmission jack it's easier to just take out just the tranny, if you don't I'd say take them both out. Pulling the motor doesn't take long at all, last time I pulled mine out it didn't even take 2 hours, and that was by myself in a cramped and dark garage. Lining everything up while on your back is going to be a massive pain, especially for the auto.

The harness unplugs inside the ECU under the rain tray by the brake booster. It comes out in 1 piece so you don't have to touch any plugs on the motor. Just follow a motor and transmission removal diy, it's pretty simple.

There are three engine mounts- The snub mount that connects to the cross over pipe, and one on each side of the engine. There are two transmission mounts as well. It is advised that all mounts be replaced so make sure yours are still useable. They tend to go bad after a while
