It is not sitting 3x3 on each side. According to the link I posted, the name VR6 comes from the german word "Reihenmotor" which translates as row engine or straight engine. It is like a SOHC with each cylinder in a staggered setup but in a straight line. Furthermore, the VR6 has the same firing order as a inline 6 engine. It uses one cylinder bank and one cylinder head. For more information please check out the following link: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/VR6_engine

yes i read all that... but not once did it say this motor is an inline six they said it is a staggered setup and is very close to a "vee" set up, but has the same firing order as a straight 6... so like i said its not a straight 6

The original idea of the VR6 is that it allowed a 6-cylinder engine to fit in the space designed for an inline-4 - essentially it was a packaging exercise to allow more engine in less space. Technically it's a V6 because it has interspersed and alternating cylinders with a 15-degree bank angle, but in all practicality it's an inline engine. It was commonly referred to as an "inline-V" even. Yes, the bank angle does quslify it as a V6 but realistically it's an inline engine.

but they arent in a straight line.. thats the point... the inline 6 or "straight" 6 is jsut that.... straight... while these may not sit directly opposite of each other they also do not run straight through either so it is neither a v or an inline... so i guess inline v is the only thing that can work haha

Phil you're right in that it doesn't say that it's a full inline 6 engine because it does indeed use a staggered setup with the cylinders arranged in different angles. Here's where I disagree with you, the german name says its a straight engine and since the cylinders are not mounted under two separate cylinder heads, like "ImTheDevil" says, realistically, it's an inline 6 with a twist.

WELL he also said as did the article since they are mounted at angles... i think 10.5 and 15 degrees... its not straight either... so the only logical name im going to accept is inline V or ******* racecar haha

The VR6 is an inline 6. The cylinders may be staggered, yes, but it's not a true V. The name also suggests inline 6, which is exactly what it is, SOHC with a common head.
