have a 96 a4 2.8 non quattro. had trouble starting and changed temp sensor now starts without a problem. now it won't stay running unless I give it gas. won't idle and it sounds like a diesel does anyone have any ideas I could try?

Trottle position sensor or knock sensor u should vag scan your car and see whats up

 

I have vag-com but my laptop isn't working worth a crap. Is knock sensor same as cam sensor? Thanks for reply

 

Also sometimes it will drive fine if I give it gas and other times I can hold it to the floor and barely move then it will take off after about 10 seconds holding it to floor.

Those are two different sensors. Limp the car to autozone and have it scanned for codes. That's always the first step. Do a search for "throttle alignment" and you'll find a way to more or less align the throttle position sensor to smooth out the drivability.
