98 A4 2.6 V6 - a couple of problems
Hi All
I am new to this forum and new to Audi. Though I like the car and enjoy driving it I have a couple of problems:
1. Interior light: When i unlock with the remote the interior light goes on and then i open the doors. It fades eventually but does NOT go on with the doors open. I have check what i thought to check. What could cause the interior light NOT to go on when the doors are open even if the switch is in the correct position.
2. Alarm system: I have a friend who also has an A4 - same model but 1.8. When he presses his remote to lock i hear the hooter/alarm sound (quick beep). Now, mine does not do that. However, on the inside on the frame where the seatbelt is reeled on, there is a button which one can press when someone is in the car and the alarm won't activate when locked. If i press this i get an acknowledging beep and that's it. The alarm doesn't seem to get armed at all.
3. I had a headlight break (glass) and i have tried to source the same 3 buld unit (bosch) and in South Africa this 3 bulb unit is not available. So, i have to replace both headlights with the same 1 bulb unit. The plug config is different though both round - the 3 bulb has 5 pins and the 1 bulb has 4 pins. Any ideas on wiring? The first position on the light stem is park (dim) second is driving and pushed forward is brights. The idea is "driving" and brights are on the 1 bulb so where is the "park" light bulb to go? In the indicator corner cluster? Also, i take it, from some info i found, one of the bulbs in the 3 bulb fitting is for the fog lights. I have no problem rewiring for a 1 bulb but i just need to know what all the wires are for and the differences.
Well i hope i made sense. Thanks in advance for all help

Hi Shearder, i am also a newbie to these cars and this forum, so i can only be vague, if you hunt about the internetyou may find more detailed info on these matters.
with regards to the horn honking, that is something that can be programmed via the VAG-com (diagnostic connector)
(you can buy a lead and software fairly cheap to use on your laptop)
you can apparently set a variety of different functions this way such as closing the windows/sunroof with the key fob etc etc., you can also, of course, decide whether you would like the horn to honk and/or the lights to flash when arming the alarm.
I will also have a quick stab at the alarm button, it had me confused too, as far as i could see, it shows as (not) armed by a red light coming on in the switch itself once pressed.
(mine doesn't beep though, so just as confusing - another "option" ?)
It does as you say, stopsthe alarminterior roof sensorarming when someone is left in the carwhen it's locked.
My interior light doesn't work at all with the doors, regardless of the switch position, i reckon it could be to do with the door switches themselves......
hope you iron out the creases in your car mate, they would appear to be fairly good cars when looked after.

Hi quattro lover;
thanks for the reply. Not sure how i will get my hands on a VAG-com connector here in South Africa. I may have to purchase from overseas and with the exchange rates hmmmmmm... but yes, i have seen this on the net. I see you have the same interior light problem lol
Perhaps the previous owner had something disabled by the stealer assuming the door switches also activate the alarm so with the door switches disabled or alarm disabled it may affect whether the switches work or not...
As far as point 3 is concerned with the headlights, the wiring config was exactly the same save for 1 pin being absent. This absent pin i assume to be the "city" light of front fog. However, with that said, i have used a multi tester to check current with all lights on including the fogs and i get no current to the 5th pin. So either that is also disabled or not i don't know. When i turned on the original 3 bulb lights and pressed the fog light button no fog light came on though there are 4 bulbs in the array. 2 are the same H7's i think, and 2 smaller ones. It doesn't appear to make any difference in any switch position and fogs on or off to the lighting. So i was going to use the 5th wire (now not used - no power it seems) to drive independent fog/driving lights i would have added into the bottom grils (modded of course) to work of the fog light switch. hmmmm... who knows now.
