The only bad thing about the 12V 2.8's is the EGR passage in the manifold plugs up with carbon and gives you the dreaded CEL for low egr flow. That and the tendency for the thermostat to fail open and not let the car heatup. Suppose that's better than failing closed and overheating the engine.
I have the 30v and am experiencing that very problem.

Nope, the evap system is another thing altogether. Often the N80 carbon canister purge valve isn't working correctly. The computer tells the purge valve to open under programmed conditions, and expects to see the O2 sensors report a richer mixture, as gas vapors are drawn from the canister. Other things that can cause evap codes are leaks, faulty gas caps, and so forth.
