Default '99 A4 Engine Oil

Hello all,

I noticed that my engine oil was running low so I added a quart of Mobil 1 0W-30. I was in a bit of a hurry and couldn't remember if my mechanic added 10W-40 or 10W-30 during my last oil change, so i went with the latter. Here's my question: will 10W-30 damage/hurt my engine? The oil is now slightly darker, but not my much. The engine also seems to work a bit harder during idle. For reference it's a 2.8L.

Thanks for any help.

PS- Another quick question: should I check the oil when the engine's warm or cold? I've heard different answers so just wanted to be clear on that one.

I don't know the answer to the first question but i do for the second.

You always check your oil, when the car is cold, because all the oil has dropped down in the pan and will give a proper reading, opposed to the engine being hot and all the oil is still in the cylinders/pistons,dripping down into the pan,not allowing for a accurate reading.

I run conventional 5W30 in my 99 2.8 with no issues.

There are a TON of opinions on what others deem necessary to use. I believe 5W30 is common to run. Depending on what climate you live, a different viscosity level may be necessary.

Personally I use 5W30 Quaker State Synthetic because it's cheaper than Mobil1....hope this thread won't devolve into "that brand sucks you should use this".

I ran 5W30 and 5W40 previously, but 0W40 seems to produce the smoothest idle. Could just be my imagination though lol
