A friend of mine has a 1999 1.8T Tip A4. It's been running a bit rich and she did a milage calc. Yesterday and it worked out to be only 15mpg. Its maily about half mountain driving and half highway. I'm an S4 guy so don't know much about the 1.8T.

Any ideas?

 

They should be getting MUCH more than 15mpg I even get better than that with the K04 and supporting mods.

Have they been using Synthetic Oil? If not check for sludge.
Do they have any vac leaks?
Do they have any check engine lights?

 

running rich will definately cause crappy gas mileage... lol, does she boost a lot??

 

It's a chic friend who really doesnt know much at all, boost would mean nothing to her. Since we live in the mountains, we drive a lot over a mountain pass so I'm sure she's boosting a fair amount coming out of turns. I was thinking a bad sensor or a vac leak but without a gauge I'm not sure if the engine is in limp or how much boost she's making. Apparently it "drives fine"

 

Change the air filter.

 

How many miles are on this car?
Any mods done to it?
Does she here a flutter when letting off the gas? Maybe be bad DV.
New plugs might help also.

 

Not sure the miles right now but it never occurred to me it could be a bad DV, makes sense though. I'm going to try and scan it for codes and check the injectors balance and the plugs.

 

It has 130,000 miles on it and she doesn't think theres a "fluttering," then again she started making engine noices when I asked he what he normally hears . We'll check the injectors, timing, etc. Any other ideas?
