Active rear speakers - why?
My car is a '98 A4 saloon.
I have the standard factory tape deck, non BOSE, with the active rear speakers.
I understand that the fronts are driven from the head unit and the rears recieve a low level input from the head unit for the amp.
My question is why did Audi go down this route - why not just have the head unit powering all the speakers?
Does anyone have any idea what power rating amplifier could be safely connected to the existing wiring? I would imagine that the standard amp is pretty low powered and fitting an aftermarket amp of pretty much any description would try and pull too much power through the factory cables?

BUMP!
Has anyone fitted an aftermarket amplifier using the factory power cabling and/or the factory low level signal cable?
Either to power aftermarket rear speakers or to power a small sub or subs in the rear shelf?

you wouldn't run power for the after market amp from the factory, you'd run it from the battery. you can run any power amplifier you need. the signal would come from rear speakers. signal and power are two very different things
