Do you have the plastic trim piece off and the nut that was in it is stuck on the screw? I replaced mine and the material surrounding the nut wasn't strong enough and just broke when I turned the screw. I took the plastic piece off and used vice grips to hold the nut while I SLOWLY turned the screw so it didn't break. The trim piece slides back an inch or two and then pulls straight off.

When I did mine, the metal piece that screw screws into broke free of the rubber, so the rubber piece came off. I then just used some vise grips to hold the end in place, while I unscrewed the screw.

You gotta break the rubber part off so you can grab the brass piece with some vise grips.
