And it's worth every penny. I would SO much rather drive my B5 that needs a couple hundred bucks spent on it a few times a year than a boring, plain, ugly, uninspiring, non-sporty, and generally lame honda or toyota or hyundai that never needs the hood opened... No questions about it.
Heck, to add to that, my B5 (1999 model) is over 152k and has been basically trouble-free. I've had it for 15 months, and my list of issues is a cruise control that doesn't work (localized to the combination switch), headlight switch failure that I fixed, a cam sensor that failed and that I replaced and fixed, I have a bad wheel bearing that will be soon fixed, and a sticky driver's side map light button. That's it. I don't count things like the airbag light coming on as that's usually a connection issue and is as common on these cars as the four ring logo on the grille is.
i've had my car for a month and a half. no problems yet. well except for my DIS display cluster isjust aboutunreadable when temperature goes up, and my tape deck ate up a cassette adapter and now its not working
its just about to reach 93k on it.

CoBra03TerminAtoR I'll answer your pm here so if anyone disagrees with me they can chime in...For starters you're looking for a 2.8 30v, the most reliable of the b5 engines. Unlike the 1.8T, its far less likely to give you problems. . Overall a WELL MAINTAINED late year b5 with sub 100k should be trouble free. There are some issues with worn control arm bushings, wheel bearing, bad pixels in the gauge cluster, and the ever popular faulty abs module. All of which won't burn a whole through your wallet, unless you go to the stealerships. My car has 135k and the biggest things I've changed was an alternator and leaky radiator. The only money I spend every month is at the gas pump, thats it. The b6 gets better fuel economy and has more interior room but you have your reasons for getting a b5. Generally, going from a newer to older the reliability will decrease, but like I said before a well maintained 30v under 100k shouldn't be a hassle.
