Default Brake replacement

Hi all! I have a 1999 a4 , I am going to replace front rotors and pads. One is out of round. Do I need to reset sensors when done? And if I do what tool do I need? Thanks. This forum rocks!

I don't know if 99's even had brake pad wear sensors, but you won't need to reset anything. The sensors are integrated into the pads. You won't need any special tools to do the front pads, just a C-clamp to push the caliper piston back in. Make sure you take the cap off the reservoir before you try that so you don't blow the seals on the master cylinder.

They don't have the sensors - if your pads come with them, cut the wires off. Might I suggest upgrading to the A8/TT combo? Chris and I have both had this setup for years (along with many others) and its a great increase in braking performance for the cost.

sorry to hijack but i was reading up on that upgrade and was wondering if its cheaper to source the parts to make the kit or buy ECS kit they offer

and are the TT brackets and a8 rotors to be sourced from 2000 models. i noticed the 01 a8 had a much larger rotors than the 312mm they say to use

Go with the pre-2001. I know my buddy's 01 A8L uses the 326mm rotors and HP2 calipers from the S4. Theoretically it'd be cheaper to put the kit together (rotors are about $110 on eBay for a pair shipped) but good luck sourcing TT carriers. Those cars never seem to get parted out, and other sources for the carriers are rare and expensive. Might save you $50 or so but it'll take time and a lot of hunting. For the trade off, I'd just buy the kit and be done with it.

The only place I've seen that has TT carriers cheaper than ECS is MJM Auto Haus, and they always seem to be out of stock. I picked mine up from a craigslist ad, but I wouldn't hold your breath waiting for that to happen. The 312mm A8 rotors are cheap on ECS, and even cheaper if you catch them when they're on sale. I got my slotted rotors from their for less than $100 on clearance.

Certain 1999's do come with sensors. Check before you do any cutting. My '99.5 has sensors.
