Default Car smells like lots of gas

Over the past couple of days, I have noticed that I cant run my car with the Climate Control set to outside air, because the entire car will reek of raw fuel, with a slight cover of oil.

I don't know why the intense fuel smell, but I think ive got a leaky pcv system, which will be fixed with a catch can and some heater hose. The fuel smell is a mystery though, and I'm pretty sure it might have to do with my AWESOME 12 or less mpg. Literally 113 miles oh half a tank if highway driving.

Probably just a bad fuel pump seal. Common problem on these cars. On the 97 (which i have) it smells terrible in the trunk when the seal goes. Mine is bad too, in the summer it gets bad.

On my car, when it got really cold out, the fitting connecting from one of the hoses to the fuel rail right above the engine, would leak. There is no o-ring or anything like that just the fitting. Audi only sold the ENTIRE fuel line, from the gas tank. So i got a used one from A&P. It has worked great since today, it was -18 F this morning and I smelled some gas again.

hmm..come thing about it...i smell a hint(not very strong)of fumes, when i turn the heat on but if i click on the small curved arrow,(which i think it means its pulling in air from the outside)the smell goes away and i don't smell anything. what could this be? is this the same thing you fellas are speaking of?

yea you have a leaky pcv system. i deleted all mine, and left my crankcase breather open, so mine smells like pensacola bay during the oil crisis whenever i have any airflow on

The curved arrow means its recirculating the air in the cabin. The issue with our cars is that the air being drawn in when set to outside, is coming from under the hood. So any leaks/smells will be drawn in

So what your saying is i have to get a hose replaced? is fo,which hose is responsible for the cabin air? because when i turn on the heat, whithout the curved arrow engaged,i smell a hint of fumes but when i click on the arrow and it's illuminated, the smell goes away. ^_^

There is no "hose" for inside air, the fresh air intake is under the hood. When you hit the recirc button (the curved arrow), it closes the fresh air intake and just circulates the air in the cabin. If you want to get rid of the smell, you have to take care of whatever is leaking under the hood.

Found mine. Its one of the many hoses in the pcv system. Specifically one from the block breather
