i was on a bmw forum the other day checking out what theres is like and i stumbled upon a thread that talks about how they are supposed to change oil ever 10 to 15 kmi... and changing every 3 can actually hurt the car. i have let my oil go to 5 kmi and it was pitch black when i changed it. can anyone make sense of this?

I have always going about 7k-10k while running synthetic oils. On our Scion XA the recomended oil change is every 5k and thats on dino oil, that car is 5 years old and has over 100k on the motor. Changing the oil every 3k is just a waste of money.
