Default cluster info?? NEED HELP OR LINKS

i have a 1998 1.8t and some of the lights in my cluster is not working and the screen so i took out the cluster and notice that the left and right plugs fits fine but the middle plug is different. so im guessing that the previous owner had changed the cluster do to the junkyard writing on the bottom part.

anyways i found a few other clusters for sale and wanted to know how would i be able to put the right miles back on the cluster??

heres a pic of the cluster thats in the car now

you are correct, that cluster with the screen is from a 1999.5 or newer car. but if your current cluster is from a junkyard, how do you know how many miles the car originally had on it? you would probably just be replacing one wrong odometer with another. there are places online you can pay to burn in the correct mileage (if you know what that is), but its expensive and im not sure if they can do it to used gauge clusters, i think it can only be done on new zero mile clusters.

To my knowledge the cluster has an odometer module in the cluster itself, I have never heard of the ECU feeding the miles to the cluster. That's why when people get new clusters with new odometer modules they can set what mileage they had before, otherwise, they wouldn't be given this option since the ECU would have automatically sent the correct mileage.

this is false. the cluster stores the mileage. if faking the odometer reading was as easy as swapping out ECU's that wouldnt make much sense would it? people can swap ECUs as much as they want, the mileage stays the same.
