Clutch replacement
Hey everyone,
So I believe my clutch is on its way out, when driving in town there are a lot of steep hills and my clutch is starting to slip when starting on the hills. Even on the flat it is very rough when I release it (even if I go slow). I don't know too much about clutch changes so my question is do people commonly replace all parts at once? i.e. a clutch kit like: this kit ?
Which kit do you guys recommend?
I have done all the repairs on my car thus far, brakes, calipers, all control arms (pinch bolts), valve cover gasket, brake lines, and others but this would be my first major repair. I've never changed a clutch or the timing belt...yet.
Is this a feasible diy? I have the tools except maybe the tranny mount they talk about in the diy but I could find one. Any comments or tips about tackling this job?
Thanks

The clutch is definitely a do-able DIY if you are competent with a wrench. Here is another DIY that I found useful. I think that yours will be easier with the 1.8T than the 2.8.
Audi A4 Clutch Replacement | Happy Wrenching
You'll be happy you did it yourself if you get a quote to have it done.

its doable for a newbie i guess. make sure to have the flywheel surfaced, and replace clutch disk, pressure plate, throwout bearing, clutch fork. replacement of the rear main seal and pilot bearing are iffy. ive heard only change the pilot bearing if its bad, and the rear main seal should be changed really only if its leaking cause a new one can leak if not installed properly. but i say replace it all. if your looking for a upgraded clutch, i recommend the ecs tuning ra4 conversion
you can get the flywheel resurfaced at a machine shop or the like. id recommend the upgraded clutch kit because if you plan on modifying the vehicle at all, youll need some extra holding power. and keep in mind resurfacing a flywheel costs about 70$, so you can knock that off the 300. plus, i dont know where youd buy a kit or whats included, but some other necessities are included with the ra4 kit like the throwout bearing and flywheel and pressure plate bolts. most places include those with a kit however. but if you are even just going to chip the car, youll be very glad you upgraded the clutch when it is out the first time.
Yeah I was actually going to do the diode mod as soon as I changed the clutch and eventually I will be getting a chip. No point right now the clutch can't even hold as is. I agree that the RA4 is the way to go, I will regret it later if I go through all the trouble just to drop that big old flywheel back in there.
If you can afford a little more, spend the $ on the clutch. It is not an easily replaceable part, get the best one you can afford now (that is appropriate for your application of course.)
