Diagnose differential
With car on jack-stands, Should the driver wheel remain stationary while turning the other wheel forward by hand? For example, The front wheel will turn the other wheel the opposite direction, no matter what. Does this mean the Torsen is toast?
My 99 1.8 Tip is experiencing thud/clunking when warm and giving gas from a stop or slow with wheels turned either direction. The sound is loud violent clunking. The engine lifts and shutters each time. I can drive straight on freeway and transmission seems ok. No CEL and I don't own vag.
So far I tried replacing both front axles, a front wheel bearing, the drive-shaft carrier and cv joints, and the engine and trans mounts. The clunk does not occur on jack-stands up to 50 mph.

Thanks for reply. Unfortunately I did not account for the drive shaft spinning maybe. But I swapped rear-end and still clunking. The noise is quiet now and I hear gears grinding front center of car. I assume it is center differential.I can still drive straight with good shifting but not slow while turning. I am ready to swap to manual but before I do all that I was wondering...
Can I swap center differential relatively easy from a tiptronic? should I even bother?
Thanks
