upgrade to a K&N pannel filter or a cone filter? do you know where your airbox is? i cant tell you exactly because i have no idea what engine you are doing this to, but theres 4 or 5 clips on the airbox, unclip them. remove old pannel filter, install K&N in its place. done.

Upgraded to k&n panel filter today. Better sound, and I felt that the car pulled better, noticed it while shifting and driving uphill.. Don't think it's a placebo-effect even.
Cone filter willl give better performance probably, plus maybe cooler looks.. But you know.. You don't reealy need it

the factory airbox is actually very efficient. i've heard a cone filter on a 1.8t would actually decrease performance marginally due to the hotter intake temps. like ghost said though, it really depends on what engine you have. what works on a 1.8t might not hold true for a 2.8.

It's a placebo-effect. Your butt-dyno is not calibrated. It's not giving you any more power. You're just risking your MAF.
