Thanks for all of the help, some bad news. I ended up pulling off the timing belt covor and its the timing belt. When I took a quick look last night i thought it was ok, because it was on one of the cam gears, but when i took off the covor this morning i found it split in half. Since the motor is the 12v v6 not the 1.8t is it salvageable or am i looking at an engine rebuild?

the car has 160,000 miles i had the timing belt and water pump replaced at 75,000 and 130,000. So i am a little bummed that it broke with only 30,000 miles on it.

who did the service and where did the parts come from? Either you got a bad belt or tensioner or someone cheaped out and reused on of them
