Default front speakers sound blown - intermittent

I just got a 01 A4 with Bose Symphony audio. The larger front door speakers in both doors occassionally sound blown, especially when first getting in the car. Even at really low volumes, they sound horrible. They sometimes get better, but it is inconsistent. I've seen numerous other posts about the problem, but no real smoking gun. I've seen posts which suggested the wiring, the amp, and the head unit. Any guidance as to how to best troubleshoot? should I rewire one of them first, and see how that helps? Is the wiring pretty straightforward (i.e. speaker <--> amp <--> hu)?

TIA,
Matt

I had kind of the same problem on the pass side. When I took the speaker out I found a metal clip that holds the wiringhad fallen out and landed between the speaker cone & grille. I replaced the speakers anyway. I have the original speakers if you need them.

On the non-Bose cars, it is often the speaker dust cap becoming unglued from the speaker cone. The only way for you to trouble shoot the problem is to go in there and look around and check the connections.

Vagcom also has a speaker check program.

Thanks for your response guys.
I have already taken the door panel off and the speaker connection looks okay (I did disconnect and
reconnect everything). I checked the dust cap I think (not exactly sure what it is, but the center and everything on the speaker seemed secure). When I use my spread fingers to push straight down on the woofer it isn't as "free flowing" as I expected, but I'm really not sure what to expect either. I was thinking it should move in and out pretty smoothly. It doesn't. Still, if it was blown I would expect it to always sound bad.
