Default Fuel gauge stopped working

Hi my fuel guage reads nothing , it suddely went like this it has not been eratic . I have the following error off vcds Sunday, 30 June 2013, 09:44:50.

VCDS-Lite Version: Release 1.2

Control Module Part Number: 8D0 919 910 K

Component and/or Version: B5-KOMBIINSTR. VDO D09

Software Coding: 00460

Work Shop Code: WSC 00000
Sorted out the fuel guage now , a wire had come off the sender unit in the tank , but now my glow plug light is flashing and there are no vag com errors or brake light problems

VCID: 341B9FD31723

Additional Info: IMMO-IDENTNR: AUZ7Z0W0544969

1 Fault Found:

00771 - Fuel Level Sensor (G)

30-00 - Open or Short to Plus
does this mean the fuel sender is faulty ???? I took the lead of the sender and looped it out surely that should make the fuel guage read as full but it did nothing , any help greatly appreciated .

Pull the sender - you probably have a broken wire on the float arm. That it a dirty resistive element cause 99% of the problems with senders.

yes you were right a wire had fallen off the sender unit in the tank but I have anew problem in that my glow plug light is flashing and it has never done it before and it only started when I took the instruments out and then sorted the fuel sender unit , my brake lights are working fine ??????

Do you mean that you just pulled the plug on the sender and dead shorted it together? I don't know if that would make it read full or empty. Or it might screw up the whole circuit.

I did that job in January. Put my hand down in a tank of 10F gasoline. Once you get it out, the fix is really easy. I'd start by actually fixing the sender. See it here: Tech Article Title
