Default Gear Stick return spring

Hi, the gearstick on my car has recently started giving me grief. When in the neutral position it seems to rest over towards the right. As opposed to being in between 3rd and 4th. This means that when going from 2nd to 3rd I have to hold the stick against the spring slightly to get it to slip smoothly into 3rd.
Basicallly what I'm saying is that I think the return spring must've gone, which is why it rests over to the right now. Question is, can this be rectified easily?

Thanks
Rob

What is this "return spring" you speak of?

If it is no longer sitting in the correct spot then something has come loose, broke or the shifter linkage is bent.

It's been a couple months since I installed my short shifter, but if I remember correctly you can adjust the left-right position of the entire shifter assembly to allow the shifter to stand straight. You can also adjust the forward-backward orientation of it (useful for people of different arm lengths - I'm tall so I moved it all the way forward).
