Default Help/advice please?

Hi,

I've posted a new thread in the general A4 section (I think), sorry, unsure if I have a B5 or B6? Any help would be appreciated:

Thanks

96-01 = B5

Wikipedia can set you straight on the model lines/years.

Hopefully it was just the sensor and you didn't actually overheat the motor. There is a coolant temperature sensor at the back of the head that provides the signal for the cluster/ECU. The thermostat is purely mechanical and doesn't "talk" to the car in any way, it simply regulated the flow of coolant in the motor.

Thanks for the reply.

Could this sensor be my problem?

Thoughts are going towards the water pump (i.e. the engine is very hot in places as coolant isn't being circulated hence the temp gauge hitting max, but my air con blowing cold all the time as hot coolant isn't being circulated through the heater core to provide warm air?)

What do you think?

Thanks

A friend had the same problem not long ago, temp slowly made its way past 90c the longer the car remained on, changed thermostat, nothing, ended up been the water pump, replaced it and car is running fine now. At the time of this problem, the coolant it self in the reservoir was boiling at times. If you have similar symptoms, water pump might be the case here.

+1 on water pump failure. Even though the water pump is still spinning, the impeller can become loose on the shaft and is no longer properly circulating coolant, hence the high temperature readings and lack of hot coolant entering the heater core.

When purchasing a replacement water pump at any of the parts houses, be sure to get one of higher quality, preferably with a metal impeller, or go to an Audi agency. Also remember to purchase the correct coolant that meets VAG specification G012 so you do not have other issues to deal with moving forward.

If you're gonna go in and do the water pump you may as well go ahead and replace all the timing components is what I say. Especially if you don't know how long it's been since it's been done.

This will save you mad heartache and money in the future.
