HELP: Need engine advice

I just purchased a 2001 Audi A4 1.8T Quattro automatic for a great price. This vehicle needs a new engine and I wanted to know what my options are with $2k?

What is bad? The head or bottom end or both? You can find a decent mileage full replacement engine for way less than 2g's. Just hunt some classifieds on vortex.
