How much with a blown engine?
Hey everyone, brand new to the forum! I dont own an audi yet! but i've got a neighbour that has a 2001 audi 1.8T automatic with a tiptronic transmission ( i think thats what audi calls it?) with a completely screwed engine. I guess those engines have problems with engine slude that plug up the oil pick up? Well, anyway he took it to the family mechanic that i guess was just a complete idiot.. He ripped it apart and kind of just left it outside for about a year.. While my neighbour was trying to get ahold if him, the mechanic would tell him he has cancer and whattnot.. Just an idiot! So after they got it to audi- audi would not deem it warranty because of the way that it had been stored! So as it sits in my neighbours driveway it is silver AWD with 76,000KM on it- no head on the engine- pistons sittin in the breeze. Everything corroded to hell. My question? What is it worth? I am a heavy duty mechanic.. I can rebuild the engine- Or replace it with a new one. Is it worth it? If anyone chimes in, it would be greatly appreciated!
Thanks alot!
Evan

Car looks to be in pretty nice shape! has a really bad scratch on the right hand side from the idiot mechanic.. But the paint seems to be in really nice shape and so does the interior! 76,000 km's! (45k miles)

Probably more like $2,500, but maybe someone else with more experience in that kind of stuff will chime in.
I just bought a 2000 A4 1.8T tip silver with 121,000 miles. So alot more miles than you are looking at. My car had some front bumper damage and hasnt run in a year. I was told it ran when it was parked but would die out when coming to a red light. I too can rebuild an engine and i paid $2500 for it.
If you can pick it up for around $2500you should be good since you have A LOT lower miles and a better appearance than mine...
let us know what you decided to do!

At this point, mileage is irrelevant if you're going to be replacing the engine. If the interior is in great condition and paint is too, then about $2k is all I would pay. To rebuild it you're probably going to spend at least another $2K if not more. And that's just to fix it so it runs. You'd be more ahead finding a longblock to drop in. I like the S4 engine as suggested, but it'd be plenty more work and $$$. My advice, don't buy someone else's headache, keep looking for the right car.
Thanks for the replies guys! I really appreciate it! Yeah, its a good idea andrei.. Ive got 2 project cars right now.. and i dont think the audi would get much attention.. I'll drop the guy an offer- see what he says!
Thanks again guys!
Thanks again guys!
I had the same deal drop in my lap an dpicked it up for $2600. Mine had 74k miles though. If the block is good, you will probably still need a head, the parts and head cost me about a grand, and I should be back up and running in a couple of weeks. The book value on the car is about 10-12 k, so you can't go wrong. At most you will be in it for 4k at most if you shop around. The best prices I found for parts were AutohausAZ and Partsquick.com, they beat most other parts sites by 40% or more. Hope this helps you decisoin
