Default Immobilizer?

I'm looking to install a remote start in my '98 A4 automatic. I can't find a definitive answer on whether the key has a chip so I don't know if I will need an immobilizer bypass. Does anyone know? Some things I have read say yes and some say no. I found a wiring chart here. I bought the car to be my winter car so I would really like to have a remote start on it.

Your car didn't come with an immobilizer.

IIRC they didn't start adding immo. until 02 or 03, but I could be wrong. In any case, MetalMan is right and your car definitely won't have one.

i have a 99.5 it definately has an immobilizer, it was set off when i was about 20 miles from home had to pop start it to get it home, and then had a mechanic i know pretty well bypass the whole thing, since at that point, my central locking system was really screwed, but i know i have one so he may have one.

^Interesting. I've not heard much about people having problems with them, which is partly why I figured they didn't exist in B5's lol

Most likely wasn't a immobilizer that was the problem in the 99.5. If the immobilizer keeps you front starting the car with a key it isn't going to let you bump start it either. Sounds like something that had to do with the starter.
