onepoint, with the airbox thing you mentioned, would it make it better or worse in his case to do the popular airbox mod? If the snorkel is shot, could he just cover that part of the box with something and cut a hole through the bottom to get the cooler air from below, minimizing the under the hood air, and all the while having the better setup for eliminating the lag? Just curious, I know it made a difference in my low end acceleration doing it, and I don't even have a turbo.

Airbox mod is stupid imo (done that too!). It's just for sound, and you are altering the flow of the airbox which is already about as efficient as it gets for the ol k03. I say stock airbox in stock form or bust for the 1.8T unless you have a BT.

If you gotta have the sound then go for it. From my experience a sealed stock airbox is most efficient. In other words, I don't personaly recommend any more air entering the intake other than what the stock box/snorkel allows. More air doesnt = more power without more fuel and timing.... and this is where we get people asking about bigger injectors, fpr, etc. which is always a flame fest. I mean come on! A cone intake sucking up under the hood temps?!! Please! That "horn" on the maf is important for restricting turbulence in the air that gets sucked through the MAF for a proper reading. It's like people don't even think about that kind of stuff. They hear the growl and see the false advertised gains, and think nothing more of it.

Its just the filter? You paid $80 for a cone filter!? You'll never find someone that will want to pay even close to that. You can get lifetime use cone filter for $20 at autozone.
