Are your boots torn? A CV joint shouldn't go unless the boots get torn allowing grease out and dirt in. Once the boots get torn, it doesn't take long for gunk to get in them and start wearing.

I've been wondering the same thing. Mine also sounds very much like a CV joint, but I've read a lot about how our cars sound and behave exactly the same when our steering racks begin to fail.

Are you losing any power steering fluid (even slowly, over time)?

Anyone else have any input?

When I've had CV joints go on other cars, from my experience they start to make a noise on full lock and slowly become more apparent. They esp. make a noise when under stress (eg. full lock, moving from a standing start and possibly going up a hill). I would describe the sound as more of a clicking sound rather than a knocking sound though.

No power steering fluid lose. jacked it up today and turned to full lock, turned road wheel and you can see drive sharft jump. so cv joint has gone
