Default my mechanic thinks i need a new torque converter..how do i know?

after 4 or 5 different jobs, having tried many other things, my mechanic thinks it's my torque converter... im not sure i was wondering if anyone had a better idea ie signs it needs replacing etc..

automatic, has done around 170,000 km, regularly serviced etc;

it vibrates when you accelerate, but the minute you take the foot of the accelerator it stops.. it vibrates/shakes when i accelerate up to a certain speed but stops the second i take my foot of the accelerator. (fades when the car warms up more/has been driving for a long time). so far my mechanic has changed the cv joints/shaft and also a pressure valve.. neither were successful. also i think my MFS needs replacing, could this be the problem?

he doesnt seem to think that's the problem because it doesnt vibrate when it's coasting or idling, only when you accelerate.. and it struggles to accelerate a little.. i honestly dont know. what happened with yours?

If it only vibrates on acceleration, not while coasting, then it's not in your wheels/brakes. It will be in your drivetrain. It sounds like he's diagnosing properly, at least i also would have changed the parts you mentioned. I rarely (as in never) see bad torque converters, he may be right and you are just unlucky though. Any other trans issues?

Its the torque converter, I had a similar issue on a allroad I was working on, it would vibrate upon acceleration. It was a bad torque converter.

I am having what sounds like a similar problem. The car shutters if I accelerate quickly. It also is slow to engage a gear when I come to a stop. So if I stop quickly and then try to start again quickly the trans bangs very hard into gear. Lastly if I accelerate hard the trans does not hold its gear but revs very high before engaging fully. The car acts very normal when I don't push it hard. I have dropped the trans pan, replaced the filter and fluid.

I would have originally said a bent axle or worn U joint on prop shaft or something, but the tq converter is probably it. You aren't going to find a ton of useful feedback as most people drive manual. Did you get a quote? I'd love to know how much for the part considering it'd have to be straight from the dealer and their 300% markup. I'd be surprised if a lower mileage used trans is not a more (much more) affordable route.

Just to be sure... Your CEL doesn't ever flash does it? I had a cracked spark plug that misfired only when under load which caused the car to "shake" only when on the gas.
