Default Need quick help with timing belt

Hello everyone ,this is the question the A4 is a 2000 with 1.8T 5spd 125k is not mine but looking to buy , the guy saids that needs a timing belt , that after parking the car it never started in the morning took it to the mechanic and he said that it needed a timing belt , now Im no expert in timing belts and have never replace one how ever I am handy with cars , that this makes any sense ? can a timing belt just brake like that ? in the event that he is lying and the belt broke while running will that bend rods and valves and internal damage ? I had a honda that broke the belt and nothing got damage in the engine.
How involve is to change a timing belt for someone like me that never did one ,and how much it usually is if I had to pay someone to do it ?
I can get it dirt cheap but even cheap sometimes is not worth the aggravation.
Thank you in advance I just dont want to make a mistake and go over my head with this.

Maybe a squirrel chewed through it over night
With an interference engine, which the 1.8t is, the valves will almost always be dunzo when the timing belt breaks, tensioner fails etc. The rods will be fine, but I can gaurantee you the belt didnt just magically break over night. Plus even if it did, excessively trying to start it the next morning would bend the valves. You can DIY it, but its a bit of a pain in the *** if you dont know what you're doing. Id prolly stay away from it if I were you. If I were me tho...

Recently a member on the forums just posted that he bought a timing belt kit off ECS Tuning for $230 and had a local VW/Audi Garage installed it for $110. Although prices may vary from different locations you would just have to call around. And if you want to try it yourself here is a video of a timing belt job on youtube. Its a time lapse video, but it will give you an idea of what you'll be getting yourself into if you buy the car and want to DIY.
