Default oops! forgot washer on oil drain plug. is it ok?

Did an oil change on my car today to save some money and forgot to buy a washer to put on the drain plug. Should it be ok until the next oil change or should I redo the oil change?

No. You will need to put it back in.

So no, I shouldn't wait until the next oil change?

It will likely have a moderate drip leak - and the plug will probably be harder to break loose next time. If that's ok with you then you can drive like it.

Personally - I'd get the copper washer, drain the oil, add washer, put oil back in car.

Is there a washer on there now? If not, you'll have an oil-out on the road an loose your engine. If the old washer is still on, monitor it for leaks. You can successfully reuse a drain plug washer, provided it's not too crushed or Godzilla didn't wrench on it.

OMG, you'd think the sky was falling!

Just monitor your oil levels. If anything it'll be a very, very slow drip... if at all. Remember its not under pressure. I dont have one either and all is fine.

it might leak at little just check the oil from time to time and add as needed but let this be a lesson learned.

or if it does leak a little you can tighten the bolt just a little more and see what happens to the leak, but don't go too tight

you can also loosen the plug, put rtv on it and then put it back on, it'll hold it for a while. still though monitor your levels and don't forget the washer next time lol

I guess some of you guys have never witnessed oil-outs from quick lubes leaving off drain plug washers... Old ones can be reused, but without a drain ring at all, there is no seal.

Agreed, I do oil changes all the time at a shop I work at on Saturdays and they all agree that no plug washer, no seal.
