Angry Rough Start w/ blinking CEL, then fine...what gives?

99 1.8tq

this just happened yesterday. I started my car, and it started rough. the CEL kept blinking, until i drove for a little while. It felt like misfiring and then it would stop. on top of that, the engine is getting hot 'quick', but not overheating. The damn car has been eating coolant like it's getting paid to. I recently replaced a coolant hose, and filled it with 1 1/2 things of coolant

I fear it's a BHG

suggestions?

A flashing CEL is a misfire and shouldn't be driven. Search for misfire on the forum and it'll show you how to diagnose the cause. As for the temperature, did you burp the system to get the air out after changing parts and refilling the coolant?

Head gasket. If it's been a while, your engine might be toast. Coolant kills engine parts (e.g. bearings) pretty quickly.

Unfortunately, I have to agree with dragonrage... I think your engine is toast. Driving on a blinking CEL is never a good idea.
