Default Special VAG tools for Timing belt job?

How important are they? Can I get this done with a moderately complete garage of tools? I do have a BFH if needed.

I *think* the tools are 2.8 related, but I may be wrong. When me and my dad did his v6 eclipse, he had me hold the rear cam with a breaker bar, because it had the tendancy to pop and bend a valve

I've done a bunch of t-belts on both V6 engines as well as the 1.8Ts in both the B5 and B6 cars and have not needed the camlocking tools. A complete set of metric wrenches and sockets, channelock pliers, vise grips, Torx bits, needlenose pliers, and screwdrivers should be all you need. Index the engine properly and the cams are flat-spotted and will not spin on you like the Eclipse did.

Hes a mistu mechanic, The stupid motor wasn't developed with 2 flatspots, so in our case, either use the tool, of break out the bar

This is exactly the one I'm thinking of.

Then I should be good to go. Thanks for the info. Sending another $400 on a deposit for tools didn't seem worth it.

No need for the tools, but they are nice if you replace the seals on the crank, cam, and intermediate shafts.
