Default Sputtering above 3200rpm: A4 B5

My A4 Avant 1.6 (ARM engine, 101HP), 07/2000 has stable idle, but sputters above 3200rpm (any gear) and its gas mileage has become terrible.

VCDS yields 1 code:
00520 - Air Mass / Air Flow Sensor (G70)/(G19)
28-00 - Short to Plus

I've cleared the code, but it immediately comes back.

Is it simply a matter of replacing the MAF?

From what I've read in other threads of people experiencing similar sputtering behaviour, most likely candidates would be
-spark plugs and/or cable(s)
-coils
-fuel supply
-camshaft position sensor

But the error code doesn't seem to support any of these, does it?

cheers

A dirty of bad air flow most certainly can have those symptoms if not be the most common one. You car throwing an air flow error is also a good sign in where to start looking, give your air flow a good clean and see if it helps otherwise see if you can find a replacement and go from there.
